Dispelling the Myth:  How America can achieve high quality, lower cost health care


T. R. Reid, author, correspondent for The Washington Post, and National Public Radio commentator is among a growing number of healthcare experts that believe we can reduce costs and improve quality and access. He will discuss how Maine’s economic future depends on our ability to understand healthcare cost drivers and bringing those costs down.  He will highlight his belief that the push for more efficiency does not diminish our access to the highest quality of care.

 In his 2009 bestseller The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper and Fairer Healthcare, he points to other industrialized democracies that insure that all citizens have coverage.

In a new PBS documentary he examines how cost and quality varies across the US and describes the progress that employers, physicians, hospitals and others have made in reducing  variations and driving down costs.
